A District of Columbia man assaulted three women in the span of an hour Monday afternoon and was eventually arrested after he tried to rape the third victim outside a K Street office building, according to police and court documents.

Police have charged Edwin K. Wright, 23, with two counts each of  sex abuse and assault, following a string of incidents that ended when a group of citizens tackled the man at 15th and K streets. The crimes allegedly occurred between Foggy Bottom and McPherson Square shortly after rush hour.

Court documents state that Wright grabbed a woman and shoved her on the ground under the awning of 1500 K Street — which houses several law firms and Agence France-Press — at about 7:10 p.m. The Southeast resident then ripped off her underwear and molested her, covering her mouth while she screamed, according to a police report.

Several people in the area heard the screams and chased him across the street as he tried to escape. They held him on the ground and flagged down a nearby Metropolitan Police Department cruiser.

Police on the scene realized he fit the description of a man who had just punched a woman in the back of the head on Pennsylvania Avenue. Metro Transit officers then arrived and said someone with the same description had just tried to kiss and grab the breasts of a woman in the Farragut North station.

The two other victims were brought to the scene and positively identified Wright as their attacker.
