he U.S. armed forces are continuing to meet recruiting and retention goals, and in some cases have exceeded expectations, the Department of Defense announced this week.

According to the defense department’s July figures, three of the four branches of the military exceeded their recruiting goals:

• The Army surpassed its goal of 10,000 by 141 recruits;

• The Marine Corps saw the biggest percentage gain, recruiting 689 new Marines beyond its 4,094 quota;

• The Air Force pulled in 14 recruits above its goal of 2,541 airmen;

• The Navy met its 4,200 goal.

As for retaining service members, the defense department said the Army, Navy and Marine Corps met or exceeded their goals.

The National Guard and reserve branches also met, and in many cases, exceeded their recruiting goals, the defense department said.
