The awards, which are sponsored by nonprofit Urban Solutions and by The San Francisco Examiner, recognize non-chain-store businesses that have helped invigorate the communities in which they work.
“This is not just about serving the best burrito in San Francisco,” Urban Solutions spokeswoman Maureen Futtner said. “It’s about serving the best burrito and providing a gathering space for people in the community, or contributing to the greening of the street, or opening doors for the local artists to come and display their work.”
Urban Solutions is a San Francisco nonprofit that works to help grow businesses and jobs throughout The City.
The Hwa Rang Kwan Martial Arts Center on Fifth Street was the recipient of last year’s first-place award.
“I was very honored and humbled,” owner Steve Rappaport said.
A new category this year will recognize small businesses that pursue green, environmentally friendly practices and also meet other award criteria.
Nomination forms must be filed by 5 p.m. Friday. They are available by calling (415) 346-0199 or from www.urbansolutionssf.org/nominate.
Award winners will be announced Oct. 7.
