Lockout delays installation of ShotSpotter

Terry Childs is in no way to blame for this delay. Please make sure that it is stated that the passwords for this Network were never changed. For several years Terry has been the only person with the passwords and this was acceptable prior to this incident. This is an issue of poor funding and a complete lack of adequate staff due to poor management on an executive level and now they are trying to blame this on the Terry situation. If there was adequate staff from a network perspective they could have configured the connections in a test environment, placed them at the endpoint where the nodes needed to be and when the network became available and connect up the nodes. Lastly, they could have worked out the kinks and the connectivity is up. But since Terry is gone I'm sure no one else could have thought of that one. You guys should point the finger at the right people for this one. Bet you no one thought of this when they layed off their previous network employees for budget reasons.

Please do a little more research on the case before you go writing an article on the story. In my opinion the system is not working because Terry Childs is not their Network Administrator anymore. Now they have a bunch of experienced IT staff trying to restore the network. While trying to restore the network they are creating more problems (just Google the case). This case is going to be a landmark case for the IT industry. I encourage you to look at the entire case, talk to your IT staff at your office, ask around, read the blogs, and then make an opinion.

Dear Examiner, I really love the new and colorful format of your most excellent newspaper. I have read the paper from day one, and it justs get better and better. Unfourtunately I live in a SRO and the Sunday paper is not in the weekly boxes. But I make a point of going to the Castro for breakfast, rather early, and lo and behold, there are businesss that are closed on Sunday and I admit freely to taking there paper. I guess that makes me a thief, however the Sunday Chronicle is expensive, a waste of money, and I never finish the damn thing until the following Friday. Chief Lanier you have the most expensive COMMAND STAFF of any chief in this DEPARTMENT's history and YOU haven't got a clue about what needs to be done -- your response when interviewed recently -- criminals beware -- you were LAUGHING and 6 people had just been shot... you are a JOKE, you need to go fleece another city, I'm sure somewhere out there is a city just waiting for your ORAL skills....

Also what happened to stop and frisk it appears that this is no longer a part of the regular duties of MPD they just respond from crime scene to crime scene, for example I saw 20- 30 supicious subject standing on a corner an as opposed to getting out and asking what these guys were doing and telling them to disburse MPD just rode past, also Ray Charles can see the police coming from a block away with the strobe lights blinking and begin to run and hide, why is this still being done this is not effective policing

The MPD is in complete dissary the police are stating that the answer is more police officers with high powered guns but the streets are supposed to be safe Mayor Fenty and Mr. Peter Nickles did not think that the city was dangerous enough for us ordinary citizens to own guns as part of our constitutional right the DC police can protect themselves (by getting high powered rifles but ordinary citizens can't. Also some of the shootings in the past two weeks such as the one on North Captiol St and the shooting on Lincoln Road the police were in the area and knew the area was "volatile" but could not stop the shootings and blame it on the citizens stating "citizens don't cooperate with police" and who would considering some of the officers are have ties with felons. It is proven that they release confidential information and are also rude and verbally abusive. Also what happened to the old fashioned traffic stops of moving vehicles considering most shooting happen from moving vehicles

Excuse me but the chief of police is a joke. I've said it once and I'll say it again. She doesn't know a damn thing about her department. She only cares about how the officers feel about her and get even mentality. She is just like her damn boss Uncle Fenty. The citizens don't matter to her. I watched her on the district cable channel and she laughed when questioned about the homicide rate. To me it was insulting and nauseating to see her performance. This city is going to hell in a hand basket, with Fenty leading the march.

Stand to the side and let them shoot each other. No expenses here and one less on the streets. Cops cant do everything - always blame the police seems to be everyone solutions.

Here we go again, they can put a Police Officer on every corner, they will just wait until a change of shift or the police is not looking. All this mahem will not stop until the people in the Community say enough is enough and start giving the Police info on these thugs that continue to reek havoc on the community and those wana be mothers and Grandmothers stop covering for and sheltering these thugs. Then and only then will the situation change no matter how many gun control or other laws are passed. No snitch rule means the thugs continue to make the community a haven for thugs and you may be next.

The city needs all the officers working, while I don't feel that we can blame the new Chief for the shootings becuse she can't control when these street thugs decide to shoot each other I do think that all officers across the board should be on the street to include hiring more officers to patrol the city streets. Why not do an emergency legislation/law to request more officers for the citizens.

How many crimes has the Shotspotter solved? Crime fighting should be done by police to try to prevent crime. That $400K could be better spent.

While this sort of surveillance is convenient, and useful, there is nothing like having A REAL PERSON in the area. Let's try more officers on patrol, building trust and making friends. This sort of remote monitoring only leads, inch by inch, to "Big Brother".
