Police investigating the shooting of a 14-year-old boy in Herndon are drawing links to possible gang activity — reminding some neighbors of a similar crime that disturbed this quiet neighborhood before.

The teen was shot Sunday night outside of a house on Saber Lane while visiting relatives, Herndon Police Department spokesman Jeff Coulter said. He was later treated for a lower-leg wound at Inova Loudoun Hospital and released.

Witnesses told police the shots were fired by an unknown person in a green Toyota Camry. Coulter said his department is working with the Northern Virginia

Gang Task Force because at least one of the people standing next to the victim was a known gang member.

The incident was similar to the last slaying in the area in 2004, when a man on a bicycle fatally shot a 17-year old about a block from Sunday’s incident, and then fired at a 16-year-old girl as she ran away.

The killer allegedly sported an MS-13 tattoo, representing his status in the powerful Salvadoran gang.

Residents of Saber Lane said on Monday they had mixed feelings about the safety of the neighborhood.

“We really don’t feel safe anymore here,” said 27-year-old Sadas Mahmood, noting the frequent noise and police activity on the street.

“It used to be a really nice area, but now it’s always like there’s something going on in the neighborhood.”

Mahmood said when she parks her car late at night, she asks her parents to come outside to make sure she is safe walking the 200 feet to her home.

Gregory Golem, 55, said he feels very safe in the area and hasn’t witnessed any suspicious activity beyond teenage pranks. He added that almost everyone who originally bought homes on the street 20 years ago has since moved away.

Police are requesting that anyone with information about Sunday’s crime call the Herndon Police Department at 703-435-6846.
