The timetables remain sketchy; the optimism is not. The Redskins are confident that several key players will return from injury, some as soon as this week.

Safety LaRon Landry (hamstring) and rookie wideout Devin Thomas (hamstring) might play against the New York Jets Saturday after missing the first two preseason games.

“I feel good about that,” Redskins coach Jim Zorn said.

Landry’s absence caused Shawn Springs to move from corner to safety, a move that can be done because of Washington’s improving depth at corner with Leigh Torrence and Justin Tryon. The Redskins likely will use Springs at safety in some packages even with a healthy defensive backfield.

Other injury updates:

Cornerback Carlos Rogers » He hasn’t missed a practice since returning on July 28, but Zorn is still uncertain when he’ll play. There’s a chance it could be vs. Carolina in two weeks. There’s an equal chance he won’t play in the preseason, depending on what the trainers say.

“He looks great and he’s feeling great,” Zorn said,  “but I don’t want to overshoot just because we’re getting excited about how he looks in practice.”

Linebacker Rocky McIntosh » At least Rogers has taken part in all the 11-on-11 drills, something McIntosh can’t yet say. He’s unlikely for the Jets’ game Saturday.

“We like how he’s moving,” Zorn said. “We have to be careful.”

Defensive end Erasmus James » Zorn said they’re holding him back after he dealt with knee and shoulder issues last season. He’s in the same position as McIntosh and Rogers as far as potential playing time this preseason.

Receiver Anthony Mix » He fractured a rib Saturday and likely won’t play vs. New York. And rookie safety Chris Horton was expected to be re-evaluated last night to see if his colon infection was improving. The Redskins hope he can play vs. the Jets.
