Supervisor Gerardo Sandoval, responding to a wave of violence in The City’s Excelsior district, is urging more police involvement in the neighborhood before another tragedy strikes.

Sandoval, whose district includes the Excelsior, located in the southern part of The City, cited eight murders in just more than four months — including a triple homicide that took the life of a father and his two sons — as examples of the violence.

Sandoval, who will hold a news conference Tuesday to highlight the violence, said the neighborhood needs increased foot and car patrols from police officers, and better intelligence communication within the department’s gang task force.

“We’re getting to the point where if something tragic happens again, there is going to an explosion of community outrage,” Sandoval said. “This cannot go on.”

He said it may be necessary to install an injunction that would ban known gang members from congregating in the Excelsior, a tactic that is currently being used in the Western Addition, Mission and Hunters Point neighborhoods.

Matt Dorsey, spokesman for the City Attorney’s Office, the agency in charge of issuing gang injunctions, said that “the city attorney has been consistent in saying that he will consider and pursue additional gang injunctions where they are warranted and there is evidence to do so.”

San Francisco Police Department Deputy Chief Kevin Cashman said that specialized units have been redeployed in the neighborhood in response to the violent crime, adding that increased community involvement will help the department prevent and solve crimes.
