Shoppers were surprised Monday to learn Boscov’s will soon close three of the chain’s six Maryland stores.

The chain on Monday said it would close “underperforming” Baltimore-area locations in Glen Burnie, Owings Mills and White Marsh. Clare Dieter of Baltimore said she was sad to hear the store was closing, but added she could understand why.

“They are starting to charge more for things and they are offering less,” Dieter said outside Boscov’s White Marsh location.

Dieter is a regular shopper at Boscov’s and said she likes shopping there because Boscov’s is one of the few department stores that still has a candy department. “They have homemade fudge — I love their fudge.” Dieter said.

Gina Thornton, of Bel Camp, said she was sad to hear the store would be leaving the area. She has been a loyal Boscov’s customer for several years because of the store’s low prices and good selection of clothing and other household items. Most customers said they would simply move on to one of the other department stores such as Macy’s or J.C. Penney’s to do their shopping. Shoppers like Jim White, of Bowie Rock, chose Boscov’s because of its location.

“This store used to be a Macy’s and we would shop there. We like White Marsh and we like this general area,” White said.

“I’m a small-business owner myself, so it’s sad to see any business go under because I know how much hard work it takes.”
