Record number hits links for Franciscans
After a night of storms, the skies cleared just in time for the recent Franciscan Center Charity Golf Tournament, held at the Towson Golf and Country Club. More than 125 participants, a record number, helped raise more than $50,000, which will help fund an emergency outreach organization in Charles Village.
The youngest participant was Jonathan Warns, a 14-year-old student at St. Paul’s School in Brooklandville who beat out all “the old guys” in the men’s “Closet to the Pin” competition. Proud pop Hugh Warns, who is a trustee for the center, said: “Jonathan just took up golf recently, so this is amazing. We were the last of 28 foursomes, so I thought we were going to get a lot of ribbing [on the final hole], but we didn’t.”
Corporate support was at an all-time high, and the huge live and silent auctions were an enormous success.
“This is an opportunity for the business community to reach out and help those in need,” said Tom Phelan, who serves as chair of the center’s board of trustees and is the CEO of the Injured Workers’ Insurance Fund. “I applaud all the companies. This event just keeps getting better every year.”
This tournament wasn’t all about the guys. A strong female contingent participated, led by Sheila Bertoldi, who won top prize in the women’s “Closest to the Pin” competition.
Grumpy old man?
Spotted at Junior’s Wine Bar in Federal Hill was none other than NOT Jenna Bush-Hager but Baltimore-based TV writer/producer David Simon, best know as the creator of “The Wire.” Dining alone, he was approached by two young ladies, seeking autographs. Simon appeared to be miffed by the intrusion, but he obliged. Maybe he’s still mourning the end of his hit series.
Anne’s top pick
