The region will pick up another $11.5 million from the Regional Catastrophic Preparedness Grant Program.
D.C. and the NCR received $352.2 million in homeland security grant funds between 2002 and 2007, according to a spreadsheet provided by the D.C. Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency. All of the money received through 2005 has been spent, while two-thirds of the 2006 and 2007 dollars — both three-year grants — remain unspent, said Charles Madden, the agency’s acting grants manager.
Specific plans for the 2008 funds have not been released, but local leaders say one focus will be improving the capacity to provide mass medical treatment in the event of a major emergency.
Other targets include law enforcement upgrades and improvised explosive device prevention and protection.
The NCR is comprised of 11 local jurisdictions, two states and D.C.
