ORIOLES REPORT CARD

IT WAS OVER WHEN …

The Yankees put together back-to-back four-run innings in the sixth and seventh. Spotting the Yankees five runs in the first three innings wasn't helpful, but the Orioles bullpen turned a leak into a waterfall. Brian Burres allowed four runs in 1 1/3 innings, and Fernando Cabrera allowed three runs and recorded just two outs.

O'S FANS CHEERED …

When first-time starter Dennis Sarfate struck out two in the first inning. Unfortunately, he also allowed three runs in the frame. Two of the five runs Sarfate allowed were un-earned. His defense let him down during a day in which he went four innings, scattering two hits and three walks against five strikeouts.

O'S FANS JEERED …

When the Orioles aided the Yankees' 11 hits by committing an error, allowing a passed ball, throwing a wild pitch and hitting a batter. Overall, the Orioles looked more eager to escape the Bronx in timely fashion than to do so having completed their first three-game sweep in the Bronx in 22 years.

FANTASY STUD …

Yankees designated hitter Bobby Abreu hit two home runs, his 12th and 13th of the season, in a 3-for-4 performance. He walked once, drove in three runs and scored four.

GOOD CALL …

By home plate umpire Mark Wegner for not ejecting Alberto Castillo for hitting Jose Molina with a pitch in the seventh inning. The sweeping breaking ball hit Molina in the right leg. After New York's Edwar Ramirez was ejected in the seventh for throwing at Kevin Millar, Wegner made the right choice in a blowout game.

BAD CALL …

By the Orioles if they opt to make Jim Johnson a starter. Dennis Sarfate didn't fare well in his first major league start, and though Johnson has more starting experience, the Orioles would be wise to leave him in his eighth-inning role. If it's not broke, don't fix it.

IF ONLY …

Shortstop Juan Castro always hit like he did when he pinch-hit for Aubrey Huff in the eighth inning. Castro, who is batting .194, hit his 33rd career home run. He's with the Orioles to play strong defense at shortstop. Anything else is a bonus.
