Maryland borrowers carry a median credit card debt of $2,042 β€” the fourth highest in the United States, according to Americans for Fairness in Lending.

Alaska leads all states with a median credit card debt of $3,384 for each borrower β€” more than $1,200 higher than any other state. New Hampshire ($2,109), Connecticut ($2,094), Maryland and Colorado ($2,030) round out the top five.

West Virginia ($1,237), Iowa ($1,135) and Mississippi ($1,098) are the states with the lowest median credit card debt.

β€œThe burden of credit card debt is felt in every state across America, with devastating impact on consumers and communities everywhere,” Jim Campen, executive director of Americans for Fairness in Lending, said in a statement.
