A senior midshipman at the U.S. Naval Academy was killed Monday, academy officials said Tuesday.

Aaron Hampton Reaves, 21, of Kennesaw, Ga., was driving northbound on Route 301 in Caroline County, Va., when his 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt crashed into a tree about one mile from Fort A.P. Hill, said Sgt. Thomas Cunningham Jr.,

a Virginia State Police spokesman.

Reaves, who was wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene about 3:37 a.m., police said.

“While fatigued driving may have played a role, the cause of the crash remains under investigation,” Cunningham said.

“There’s no evidence that alcohol or excessive speed was involved.”

Academy officials said Tuesday that Reaves had been on leave and was returning to the academy for a summer training cruise.

Reaves’ father, Joel Reaves Sr., said Tuesday that he was hesitant to comment until after the Naval Criminal Investigative Service completes its investigation.

“My son was a good young man,” he said, adding that the family was still making funeral arrangements.
