MONDAY STAR OF THE DAY

Ray Rice: The running back is building a case why he should have been a first-round pick. The former Rutgers star did not get intimidated after being tackled by linebacker Bart Scott so hard his helmet came off. He also proved to be a solid receiver out of the backfield, making catches from all three Ravens quarterbacks.

PLAY OF THE DAY

Quarterback Troy Smith has had his struggles in the early part of training camp, but he managed to find the end zone Monday when he connected on a 20-yard pass to rookie wide receiver Justin Harper, who then ran the rest of the way for a 44-yard touchdown play.

YOU SHOULD HAVE SEEN

Fans and players received their first peak at the newest Ravens on Monday. “Rise” and “Conquer.” Two live Ravens — birds, not players — will appear and at every home game this season. Several players got to the birds during the team's huddle at the end of practice. The last of those players, wide receiver Derrick Mason, held the bird as the team yelled “One, two, three, Ravens,” before breaking practice.

QUARTERBACK BATTLE

Kyle Boller took more of the plays with the first team, establishing an early rhythm with Mason and wide receiver Mark Clayton. Along with his touchdown to Harper, Smith also showed off his scrambling abilities and scored on a couple of short-yardage touchdown runs. Flacco connected with tight end Lee Vickers for a touchdown during short-yardage drills, but did nothing else to separate him from Smith and Boller.

STOCK MARKET

RISING

Mark Clayton

The fourth-year wide receiver is hoping to bounce back from a poor season in which he had just 48 catches for 531 yards. He developed a nice rhythm with quarterback Kyle Boller early in practice, which included a stretch in which he caught three consecutive passes.

FALLING

Adam Terry

The offensive tackle is still trying to come back from offseason ankle surgery and it showed Monday, as he was dominated by linebacker Jarret Johnson on several plays. It hasn’t helped Terry’s recovery that he’s been moving between left tackle and right tackle until Jared Gaither returns from injury.
