City state’s attorney counters call for spokeswoman’s ouster

BALTIMORE (Map, News) - City State’s Attorney Patricia Jessamy fired back Thursday at protesters calling for the ouster of her spokeswoman, Margaret Burns.

Nearly 60 people gathered outside the Mitchell Courthouse on Thursday afternoon to demand Burns’ resignation over her controversial comments made about the beating death of Baltimore resident Zach Sowers.

But Jessamy hit back.

“I have learned over the past months that anything I, or individuals in my office, say or do in reference to the Zach Sowers case will in all [probability] be misstated, misquoted, misrepresented, misinterpreted, and/or misunderstood,” Jessamy said in a written statement released Thursday afternoon.

“Knowing this, I therefore decline to make any statement regarding past or current or future events related to the case.”

Sowers was beaten by an attacker during a robbery last year and later died from the injuries after spending nearly a year in a coma. His main assailant received 40 years in prison as part of a plea deal with prosecutors.

But statements made by Burns last month in an interview with The Daily Record’s free publication Exhibit A downplay the severity of Sowers’ injuries. Burns was quoted as saying Sowers looked like a “sleeping baby” in a coma and was not as severely beaten as his family claims. Those statements have fueled a series of protests that have stirred passions among Sowers’ friends and supporters.

Burns has said she was misquoted and offered an apology to Anna Sowers, the widow of Zach Sowers.

But supporters of Sowers’ family said Burns’ apology was not enough and called for her to retract the statements.

“What Margaret Burns said de-legitimized Ann’s platform for pursuing changes like Zach’s laws to the criminal justice system,” said Ramsey Flynn, a friend and support of Sowers. “It has become a roadblock for her.”

Flynn said Anna Sowers has been working on a 15-point plan to stiffen penalties and give prosecutors greater leeway in charging assailants whose victims are in a coma.

“We had a meeting with Ms. Jessamy in March, and she was very receptive to our ideas; I guess Marty Burns didn’t get the memo that we were working with the State’s Attorney’s Office,” Flynn added.

“I think her comments are part of a larger problem that needs to be addressed with how things work in the prosecutor’s office,” said Brian Strumke, 31, a friend of Zach Sowers who attended the protest.

The problem isn't Burns or Jessamy. Baltimore City has many problems and no one can fix them.

This arrogance is typical of the black women who lead this city. They feel that they dont have to answer to anyone, the press, victims, or the tax payers. They need to understand they work for us. But dont expect any changes form this corrupt incompetent city government. I dont know why the press allows them to be so arrogant and evasive? Ohh now I remember why, because the reporters in this city suck! Or else they would be somewhere else. A bunch of soft ball questions from "access" reporters. Well your mediocrity will keep you from ever becoming a real reporter, but you will always be available to gain "access" to ask more inane questions with zero follow up.

pat jessamy has done a horrible job as the city states attorney for the past decade! If you got the kinds of results she has in the private sector she would have been gone. But Balt city voters see a black female democrat so she must be the right choice for the job. Then she gets this huge pay raise--i dont trust any of these politicians democrat or republican because its always about the money!!!!

If I'm not mistaken Margaret Burns is the spokesperson for Jessamy, which means she was speaking for Jessamy and they both should be removed from their positions, that will never happen because Jessamy is a Baltimore politician and make no mistake about it that is what she is. I guess it shouldn't be but what is amazing is the silence from the vast majority of Politicians ,Mayor,City Council,Senators and Delegates from the City and O'Malley. The City needs a a State's Attorney and prosecutors that know what the inside of a court room looks like, instead of one's that stick their heads in sand and hope when they finaly pull it back out everything has gone away. Hey it's Baltimore would you expect anything different ? May be if the Baltiomre City State's Attorney office spent more time putting criminals behind bars instead of blaming the poice, witineses and anyone else they can think of, just do their jobs maybe just maybe Baltimore would become a safer place !
