A suspected serial rapist who police believe met his victims on Craigslist.com died after shooting himself during a two-hour standoff, Prince George’s police said Thursday.
Mark Antonio Humphries, 33, of Suitland, died about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday at a local hospital.
Police say Humphries visited Craigslist.com and chat rooms to set up dates with professional escorts. When the women showed up, police said a masked man attacked them.
The rapes began in August but were not linked until early this year.
“We think he’s possibly linked to a series of rapes in the county where he would contact the victims via the Internet and arrange to meet at various locations,” said police spokesman Henry Tippet.
Police obtained an arrest warrant Sunday in a July 14 assault and tracked Humphries around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday to the Hyattsville apartment, Tippet said.
Police set up a barricade after no one answered officers’ knocks.
Police backed off and called in other emergency personnel as they attempted to negotiate. The negotiations fell through at 2:15 p.m., when they heard a gunshot and found Humphries inside wounded from an apparently self-inflicted gunshot. — Staff and wire reports
A woman pulled from the Jones Falls has died, said officials Thursday.
Janet Lochner, 46, was unconscious when she was found around 2 p.m. Wednesday on Falls Road next to the Jones Falls. She later was pronounced dead at Union Memorial Hospital
Authorities said three people were swimming when Lochner apparently jumped into the water off a 15-foot cliff.
“People do go swimming here, and it is dangerous,” said nearby resident Terri Howard. “I was surprised to see it was an older person. Mostly, it is the kids.”
The other two swimmers were not injured.
