Smith still looking for passing grade

Troy Smith’s first day of training camp did not go as smoothly as he would have liked. The Ravens quarterback threw three interceptions on Tuesday. - AP
BALTIMORE (Map, News) - On one of his very first snaps, quarterback Troy Smith fumbled.

A few snaps later, he was intercepted by Ravens secondary coach Chuck Pagano, who was playing cornerback because the team was short players.

Then, it was Prescott Burgess’ turn to pick off Smith — and the linebacker barely had to move to catch the ball.

Finally, Tom Zbikowski got into the act, as he intercepted a pass that had deflected off the hand of rookie safety Haruki Nakamura. It ended a disastrous day for Smith, whose three interceptions were three times as many passes he completed to a receiver, as Smith went 1-for-5 passing during drills inside the 20-yard line.

And yes, Smith still is very much alive to be the team’s starting quarterback when it takes the field at M&T Bank Stadium against Cincinnati on Sept. 7.

But Smith obviously will have to play much better than he did on Tuesday at McDaniel College in Westminster. As dreadful as he has was during a sweltering, 90-minute morning practice, the 2006 Heisman Trophy winner from Ohio State didn’t lose his cool or appear to get frustrated.

“I learned from an incredible Hall of Fame quarterback, Steve McNair, to stay cool at all times,” Smith said. “I haven’t seen a moment where Steve McNair was rattled. If I want to be half the quarterback that he is, that’s what I need to focus on.”

Overall, Smith mostly has been praised from the Ravens coaching staff on the progress he has made since the end of last season. Smith appeared in four games last season, completing 40-of-76 passes for 452 yards and four touchdowns.

Smith is competing with Kyle Boller and 2008 first-round pick Joe Flacco in a rare, three-man competition for the starting job. Only the Miami Dolphins, who went 1-15 last season, have a similar competition during training camp. Each of the other teams in the AFC North — Pittsburgh, Cleveland and Cincinnati — starts a Pro Bowl quarterback.

“It is unique,” Ravens coach John Harbaugh said. “I don’t know how often it has happened. That would probably be an interesting study. It’s fun. It’s fun watching those three guys battle out.”

Harbaugh said the quarterback competition will officially begin on Friday when the Ravens hold their first full-team workout. The quarterbacks, however, hope their battle makes each one better.

“As a quarterback, I think you understand that at all times, eyes are on you,” Smith said. “To me, I’m used to it by now. The competition is, in essence [within the media]. As teammates, we understand that we may need all three of us. That’s the way we look at it.”

T-sizzle as he likes to call himself has been more like T-fizzle. It has been well proven that Suggs only has productive seasons when he has a dominant end opposite him. When pryce went down so did suggs productivity. This also was the case when boulware went down and ultimately away.It is totally cruel that a true talent such as Kelly Gregg cant even make the pro bowl when his numbers are consistent his work effort is remarkable and most of all he never complains. Oh by the way its players like Gregg that help overrated players like Suggs even get chances to get 8.5million. He should be a man honor his contract that he's in now, because that last thing he needs is for the team to look good at his position without him.

charlie said:
I have suppoted boller since draft day. I believe that given the right opportunity he could do very well in the NFL. If you look at every quaterback rated highly in the league there is one thing in common, they all have a recieving threat.Baltimore hasnt had a consistent recieving threat since they let shannon sharpe go.Since boller has been here look at who he has had to throw to. Derrick mason is really a second or third option on any other playoff team.He had Travis taylor as first option,Mark clayton cant get seperation, heap cant stay on the field. Oh,bye the way both times Heap went to the pro bowl Boller was the starter and the two years Mason has eclipsed 1000 yds Boller was the QB. In closing: Give the guy three things, protection, recievers, and real support...because we are the only fans that cheered when he got hurt.

yes i agree with this post.....it makes a lot of sense....for the salary diffrence. their production hasn't been that far apart....Dawan tied or led the leauge in interceptions by a rokie....no doubt dawan is less talented everyone knows that, but football isn't all about talent laron was criticized for going for the big hit too much, and not going for the ball..while laron landry is by far the more athletic one..but dawan might be the smartest..he works with wat he's got..he isn't the fastest, but he makes plays..and he is rearly out of position. he's also great in the box as well....dawan is a beast and very underrated, i expect big things from him this year.

Congrats Ron Snyder on what is one of the dumbest pieces of writing i have seen this offseason. To even compare the two Landry's is sheer stupidity. Dawan will even tell you himself his brother is more talented. You act as though Laron is a malcontent. As for your assertation that the Ravens have gotten more out of their Landry? Did you miss the playoff game Laron had with the two INT's or all the knockout hits he had on recievers last year? Your article is garbage.

The Receiving problem... said:
The problem with the receivers is that they have no red zone target. They got rid of Randy Hymes, who caught EVERYTHING thrown his way. I mean... just think what he could do if he has someone besides Boller throwing to him. So without Hymes... they have to count on Heap to stay healthy when they're in the red zone. You can get by with smaller receivers, but you have to score from further out. That means running passing plays longer than 5 yards. With Billick and Boller... we were never going to get that. So, hopefully this new offense and Troy Smith playing will show everyone just how right I am. I could hope for them to sign Randy Hymes also... but I know that's not happening.

Ray Lewis EXEMPLEFIES (sp?) leadership- if not playing football he could easily be a youth coach (we need ppl like him there), a motivational speaker, preacher, whatever. You can tell he is genuine with his talks (did you hear him on ESPN this sunday) and I think he is the heart of his team, his teammates obviously look to him for guidance, as do the coaching staff. While I do not personally think Ray Lewis has much football left in him, he does have a great deal of heart left in him, and I know he will use that for good of the community- he does that now too!

Mr Biscotti made a good choice with input from Cass and Ozzie and gave John Harbaugh strong support as he was introduced yesterday. He does't do Caoch Harbaugh any favors by constantly making sure everyone knows Ray Lewis is "the great leader" on the team.Part of the problem with the Ravens as a team is that it is clear Lewis, Ogden and several others have "priviledges status on the team. Suggs is still very young and very tough. There's still time for him to be the best there ever was -- if he had the drive of Ray Lewis, etc. Until then, he's just a good ballplayer who is not as good as he thinks he is.
