The 40-year-old founder of Broc Cellars and four other resident San Francisco winemakers will join forces for a tasting at Arlequin Wine Merchant in Hayes Valley on Sunday. The winemakers will talk shop with the public and pour from more than 20 wines from 1 to 5 p.m.

So you aren’t from wine country royalty? I’m from where all the best winemakers come from — that’s Nebraska. I probably would have gotten into it earlier, but I always thought that if you don’t have parents that own a winery … you couldn’t be a winemaker.

When can you remember first loving wine? My stepfather always collected wines. While most kids had baseball cards, I played with his wine collection.

Was it hard to fit in with the Bay Area wine culture as an outsider? No, not really. When I moved out here, I started at UC Davis and connected with a lot of people. I never felt like an outsider after the first couple of classes.

So how did the tasting event come about? I live in San Francisco, and over the years I’ve started to meet a few other winemakers who also live in The City. We were always talking about how we should get together and have a tasting. These are your winemakers, they’re your neighbors, in your backyard.
