SAN FRANCISCO (Map, News) - While the Bay Area typically boasts some of the lowest unemployment rates in the state, it has not been entirely immune to an ailing U.S. economy.

More than 48,000 residents of San Francisco, San Mateo and Marin counties were unemployed in June, nearly 10,000 more than last year, according to a report by the state Employment Development Department.

The statewide rate was 6.9 percent in June — up from 5.3 percent last year, the EDD report said.

Marin County maintains the lowest unemployment rate in the state at 4.6 percent, San Mateo County the second lowest at 4.8 percent and San Francisco County the sixth lowest at 5.3 percent, the report said.
