THE PIECE OF ARTWORK I LOVE: “Watsonville Olympia, 1977,” by Robert Bechtle
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS PIECE? I love the fact that it so typically represents the ’70s — the clothes, the chair. And I love that Robert Bechtle is a San Francisco-based artist.
WHAT STANDS OUT TO YOU ABOUT IT? I like the photorealist aspect of it. You question it at first glance: Is it a painting, or is it a photograph?
HOW DID YOU DISCOVER THIS PAINTING? SFMoMA acquired it after our Robert Bechtle retrospective in 2005. That was one of my favorite exhibitions. I'm so glad to have this painting in our collection.
