Edgewood (Map, News) - A Jarrettsville man was arrested July 4 after allegedly breaking into an Edgewood home and falling asleep on the living room floor, police said.

Harford County sheriff’s deputies were called to the 1200 block of Paul Martin Drive in Edgewood around 12:15 a.m. for a reported breaking and entering, sheriff’s spokeswoman Monica Worrell said. The homeowner told deputies he had returned home and discovered an unknown man sleeping on his living room floor.

Deputies managed to wake the man, later identified as Joseph Caudill, 34, after several tries, but he became combative and was placed in handcuffs, according to court documents. Caudill then began to threaten a deputy and used racial slurs as he was placed in the patrol car.

Investigators do not know why Caudill broke into the house, causing about $800 in damage to a sliding door but not taking any property, Worrell said. The homeowner said he did not know him, nor had Caudill ever lived at that address, Worrell said. Investigators made no mention in their reports of whether Caudill appeared to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Caudill was charged with third- and fourth-degree burglary and resisting arrest. He posted $10,000 bail that day and was released.
