Harford County fire department receives grant for new equipment

BALTIMORE (Map, News) - A Harford County fire department has received more than $231,000 in federal grant money to purchase new equipment, Maryland’s senators announced this week.

The Whiteford Volunteer Fire Co. in northern Harford County received the grant through the Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program, according to the offices of sens. Barbara Mikulski and Ben Cardin.

The grant will be used to purchase 100 new sets of “turnout gear” — the protective uniform firefighters wear on calls — to replace the 12-year-old equipment currently in use, said Fire and Emergency Medical Services spokesman Rich Gardiner. The money also will pay to have each firefighter “fit-tested” so that his or her oxygen mask is more airtight, lowering the risk of smoke inhalation and bringing the department up to federal safety standards.

The Whiteford Volunteer Fire Co. has approximately 70 active volunteers and responded to 516 fire calls in 2007, according to its Web site.

If all the T-shirt wearers would actually do something then you wouldn't have this problem. well guess what they don't! I could see paid services for the 40 corridor, that just makes sense with the BRAC coming. Oh food for thought the ones saying " it's the end of the volunteers are the same ones who work for a PAID DEPT in another county, some even in the war torn county of PG. Whom is known to have the worse vol/paid relationship." pot calling the kettle black. go figure

If the members of the companies having trouble came out and was as dedicated as they act then there would be no problems putting fire equipment on the street at any time, some of us do come out and put the equipment on the street even if there is not a free meal involved....
