Teen drowns in Inner Harbor

A 19-year-old man drowned in the Inner Harbor, Baltimore City fire officials said. It’s unclear whether the man, whose name was not released, jumped, fell or was pushed, said fire department spokesman Kevin Cartwright on Sunday.

The teenager was on Lancaster Street in the Harbor East area when he went into the water around 11:30 p.m. Friday.  A second man tried to rescue him.

Rescue crews pulled the second man from the water and found the teenager, who was pronounced dead at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Cartwright said. – Carolyn Peirce

Boat explodes, sinks in Bay

A 30-foot powerboat with two Alexandria, Va., residents aboard exploded Friday and sank in the Chesapeake Bay near Edgewater, authorities said.

Elizabeth Spencer, 31, was thrown from the boat about 3:10 p.m., and the operator, Guy DeStefano, 40, jumped in the water after her, Maryland Natural Resources Police spokesman Sgt. Ken Turner said Sunday.

Boaters pulled them from the water; Spencer was treated for a minor injury at Anne Arundel Medical Center. Investigators believe a mechanical failure in the engine caused the explosion, Turner said.
