MENLO PARK (Map, News) - A newspaper chain on the Peninsula has made cuts to its newsroom.

The Daily News, which publishes editions in Redwood City, San Mateo, Burlingame and Palo Alto, laid off six employees Friday afternoon at the papers’ Menlo Park office.

Daily News Executive Editor Mario Dianda said employees included two copy editors, one proofreader, a part-time columnist, an editorial-page writer and director and an advertising production worker.

The paper will also cut its Monday edition in Palo Alto and its Tuesday edition in San Mateo County.

The cuts were made due to the rising cost of print production and the downturn of the economy, Dianda said.

“We tried to avoid it, but it caught up with us,” he said. “We kept the reporters and the photographers and the rest of us will have to suck it up on the production side.”

The employees were given severance packages based on their tenure with the paper. Dianda said he believes the Daily News will be able to provide the same level of coverage.

Also on Friday, John Armstrong, president and publisher of the Bay Area News Group East Bay, announced that 29 newsroom employees will be laid off July 11. Employees remain vulnerable at the Contra Costa Times, Oakland Tribune and San Mateo County Times.

Contra Costa Times reporter Sara Steffans said the group’s new union is meeting with management in the hopes of softening the blow to workers.
