The decision trumps a 3-3 vote last week on the same resolution to end giving gym credit to students who participate in the Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps. Nearly 20 percent of students in the program, polled last December, said they enroll because they don’t want to take PE classes.
A second vote was prompted by threats of a lawsuit from San Francisco-based Public Advocates, according to school board member Norman Yee.
The Board of Education voted in November of 2006 to end JROTC programs, citing its ties to the military. The board subsequently voted to extend JROTC through the end of the 2008-09 school year.
JROTC supporters began a petition drive this month to ask voters this November whether the district should preserve the military-run classes.
