San Francisco’s school board will take a second vote on a controversial proposal to stop giving students physical education credit for a high school military program — after a vote last week resulted in a 3-3 split.

In November 2006, the Board of Education voted to phase out the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps, wanting to sever the district’s ties with the military.

The district also has been threatened with a lawsuit from San Francisco-based Public Advocates for offering PE credits for the class.

JROTC boosters have a ballot petition that would ask voters in November to weigh in on keeping the program.
