San Mateo County (Map, News) - An investigation into a teen murder suspect’s escape from San Mateo County’s Youth Services Center will be the subject of a community meeting in the unincorporated Highlands neighborhood next week.

On Feb. 14, 17-year-old Josue Orozco escaped over the wall of the center, located in the hills above San Mateo near the Highlands neighborhood. Residents have since voiced concerns about how the escape was investigated; they will be presented with the draft findings of the county’s special investigation into the escape Tuesday at 7 p.m. at 1951 Lexington Avenue.

Orozco was only 14 when he was charged with murder and is the youngest person charged with murder in San Mateo County.

Examiner Reader said:
Over the last 10 years, with the rise of gangs in the county, there have been many youth who were detained longer than 20 days for violent crimes such as murder, assault & rape. Most of these were pre-adjudication cases. It appears to be purposefully misleading the residents to say that is not the case. To now say he was speaking only of minors found guilty and serving sentences shows that Mr Buddress was trying to sell residents on accepting the facility design when they had legitimate questions. His notion that this facility - or any facility for that matter outside of maybe Pelican Bay - is escape-proof is pure fantasy. What was it they said about Alcatraz?

Loren Buddress should lose his job over this. Local residents should be demanding it.

What design flaw allowed a murderer to not only to escape, but to go unreported for hours? Did the two that helped him to escape also carry him down the hill, walk him over to San Francisco Internation Airport, and highjack a jumbo jet under the watchful eyes of terrorist type security, as they flew him to join the newly retired ruler of Cuba Fidel Castro?
