BALTIMORE (Map, News) - The first lady of Maryland, Katie O’Malley, associate judge of the District Court of Baltimore City, knows too well domestic violence’s reach and impact. For speaking out on the need for judicial training on domestic violence and reform within the criminal justice system, O’Malley was asked by the House of Ruth to be among the 26 subjects honored in A Line in the Sand, a photography exhibit on display at Baltimore’s Gallery Imperato.

What’s the most difficult domestic abuse case you’ve presided over?

I do have memories of victims who were being abused when they were pregnant. Those always stick with me as well as when abuse occurred to children. Abusers double-victimize the woman or man being abused when the children have to hear the abuse [taking place] and worry about it. I’ve heard [cases where] children were pulling off an offender from a victim.

Do you think it’s more useful to determine why people are abusive or to concentrate on what we should do with them after they abuse?

You have to look at every aspect. A judge’s sentence can include an option of probation on the condition they attend and complete the House of Ruth’s Gateway Project program, where the abuser looks at the factors that go into his or her abusing. ... It’s common for an offender to have low self-esteem, be very insecure and jealous. It’s good to try to identify those traits and have them figure out why they’re like that, but it’s also good to have the tool of incarceration. Sometimes we overthink it too much.

A fine article except for a few points left out. I think most parents don't really realize what they have gotten in until it hits them in the worst matter. Parents need to realize that not everything that a child do is funny, if you start earily then chances will be maybe few problems. I think that Scan needs to have some kind of set-up with the hospital when to-be moms come in to give birth because the nurses are the first to see signs of what may appear to be trouble later on down the road. These are not doll babies but little humans that grow up and do need nurturing until they are ready to leave home for college or marriage whatever comes first. My thing is see the problem before it gets out of hand.

The state of maryland has had a drug and alcohol council for 20 years and they do nothing at all. Its one of the most useless councils in government. No one is going to increase drug treatment because there is no money. So each Governor plays lip service to the issue and says how important it is and how most crime is drug related but there is no new programs for the people who need it. We do have more prisons and police, which continues to do very little to stop drugs, but it looks good politically. When the government is serious about increasing treatment, they will learn to work with the Private Treatment community and become partners. Use old Mental Hospitals and closed army bases and let the private sector operator them. It works and doesn't cost tax payers any money. But this council is a joke...

Kudos to Dr. Callender! It's great to see features on Afro American men who have contributed so significantly to thier profession. Having been a doctor for so many years, I commend him on all the challenges he's endured over his career and his life. I know personally that he attributes his overcoming and success to the grace of God. Though he is probably credited with saving lives through the transplants he has performed, he knows that it is still in Gods hands to perform the miracle. If you could interview him longer than "3 minutes", you'll see that there is so much more to his amazing career. The AMA owes personal apologies to Dr. Callender and so many other AA doctors who continue to contribute to this profession with humility, compassion and spirit. Finally, in the year 2008, someone on the AMA board recognizes the need to own up to the errors of the past.

The ACLU is here to keep constitutional rights protected. W/o groups like the ACLU, the gov't would trample on people's rights. The Jim Crow laws were not ok, contrary to what some here might think. Guantanamo is tragically unconstitutional and tramples everything that we stand for. The right leaning Supreme Court Justices agree and so does McCaine. The answers to fixing Baltimore City Schools are easy, and we all know what they are. Discipline in the classrooms, teach the 3 R's, teach citizenship,(how to be a good citizen-- do not litter, work ethics, common courtesy, why NOT to be mad at the world, etc). But the political will is not there to do it. So we will continue to coddle trouble makers in the class room, teach students to hate and tell them they have every reason to be mad at everyone, teach them they are OWED everything and should not be expected to work for success. Finally the Baltimore City Schools will continue to teach young people that they are never at fault and their failure at school, work, and life success is caused by everyone EXCEPT themselves. Their lack of motivation, work ethic, self reliance has nothing to do with their faliures. But in all fairness it aint the fault of the students--- it is the fault of a school system and culture that trains them to be failures--and celebrates it to boot!
