Baltimore County (Map, News) - After years of speculation about a name change, Villa Julie College will become Stevenson University, the president announced this morning.
The name reflects the Baltimore County town where one of the university’s campuses is located and eliminates any confusion about the university no longer being a Catholic women’s college, President Kevin Manning said.
“The ultimate goal of all these changes of course is to enhance Villa Julie and the possibility of other students coming,” he said.
Hundreds of students, alumni and faculty attended the announcement, and they broke into applause after students unrolled a white-and-green banner to display the new name.

This is the 5th year I have been working for "SU's" IT department. They've been bringing in all these high-priced "wall street" type IT managers lately, trying to turn the way the network is run into a streamline corporation. These guys were taught how to run corporate entities and were hired at the college to turn it into one. I don't know, just somethin to go along with how Manning's trying to bring about severe change.

The name change is a disappointment. I hope that the school will not lose its good rep. Fortunately, I graduated on time to have VJC posted on my Diploma. I'm still disappointed with the decision that was made. Stevenson University doesnt even sound right. I would have been more content with VJU or something.

This whole escapade strikes me as a group of high priced consultants delivering a solution in search of a problem. The school's rankings and reputation have steadily grown in the last ten years - but for whatever reason it seems that VJC under Manning's stewardship is in a huge rush to become something else. Time will tell whether that end product was worth it or not. Personally I'd rather see them put the "as yet unknown" amount of money this name change will cost into retaining & recruiting faculty to keep the professor/student ratio low - a cornerstone of the college's success.

Maybe not all of us are bitter as you are. Just because you are mad doesn't mean everyone has to be. You do know that changing the name was discussed long before he ever got to Villa Julie so don't pretend this is a new concept borne out of ego.

Ever since “The Tool” Manning took over Villa Julie, the school has gone down hill. “Villa Julie” was a great small private college, and it should have remained as such. “Villa Julie” was a liberal arts school that among other things taught awareness of the dangers of progress for the sake of progress. The decision to take on a university status and change the school's name had no basis other than money. There was little regard to the opinions of current and past students. I find it hard to believe that students, alumni and faculty in attendance broke into applause. Almost everything that was good about “Villa Julie” has been stripped away by Manning’s quest for recognition in the academic community.

oh and just to say to those of you that say VJC is unknown that is false. people come from all over the country to VJC and businesses know of VJC and the students it produces we are not just some no nothing college that people don't know of and i have been to college fairs and everyone i talk to thinks that VJC is still an all-girl catholic college. VJC has a strong history and people know of that history but not the present thats the conflict and the need for the name change

Why would anyone assume it's an all woman's school based on the name? Villa Julie is unkown outside of its part of Md except for a handful of people who used to live there. Those who do know about it know that it is a coed college and those who first hear about it, like me, obviously don't have a preconception of the name being all women or Catholic. The first thing that actually came to my mind was "what the hell is that, some kind of prep school?" So I agree the name could be changed, but not for the same reason.

Michael Burke, brother, FDNY Capt. Billy Burke said:
Let's see: men sit in a airport to board a jetliner. There are families all around them; wishing their loved ones good-bye; kissing them farewell. In Washington DC this includes a group of inner city school kids going on a National Geographic sponsored trip to Catalina Island, CA. The nervous kids and parents exchange good-byes; promise to call as soon as they land. Four men watching know that will never happen. They climb on each jetliner, rush the cockpits, cut the throats of the pilots and murder anybody who opposes them and fly the planes full of men, women and children into fully occupied buildings 80 plus stories in the air. Innocent people, trapped a hundred floors high, call their loved ones, bid them farewell and jump to their deaths. A fireman, the only one of his company to survive told me, "Mike, they were falling out of the sky and exploding." 406 first responders gave their lives to save others; 19 men gave theirs to kill innocents. Where is the gray area?

Villa Julie had Roman Catholic beginnings? That's news. Nothing in the name suggests any association with a religious order or the Church. Yale and Harvard both had ties to Protestantism but neither opted to change its name. I think they want to change the name becasue Villa Julie sounds so girly.

Why should anyone care what it's called? As long as they keep doing the same things they are doing now, the name shouldn't make much of a difference.
