BALTIMORE (Map, News) - Many teens don’t realize the dangers of failing to turn off all distractions before turning the ignition key.
Baltimore County Executive Jim Smith and members of the Baltimore Metropolitan Council conveyed that message Wednesday at the launch of the Regional Highway Safety Campaign in Pikesville.
Smith said parents need to recognize their teen drivers could be killed or kill someone else because of inattention.
“They don’t have the experience to even offset the unexpected while driving,” Smith said. “I would suggest that parents set parameters and rules for kids’ use of their car for their sake as well as that of their children and other drivers.”
About 3 million crashes occur annually among distracted drivers, the campaign said, accounting for more than 500 deaths and 95,000 injuries from 1997 to 2006.
