The two-time winner of ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” grew up in Atherton and began competing at age 13. With the help of her mother, Burke, 24, bought the former Metronome Dance Center in San Francisco. The Cheryl Burke Dance Studio opens Friday at 1830 17th St.

Why did you decide to buy a dance studio? My dream was always to build a dance studio. As I kept doing the show, people would always ask when I’ll open up a dance studio. I thought opening a studio in my hometown would be the best idea because I’m trying to get kids involved as much as possible.

Did you study at the old Metronome Dance Center? I took classes there as a little girl. I never would have thought I’d be buying the Metronome 10 years later.

How will you share responsibilities of running the studio with your mother? My mom has owned many businesses, so she is more of the business mind of it. I will have monthly master classes in Latin and ballroom. My job is to promote the school and to show it’s the new hip dance school. I want to bring the show into the studio.

How will you do that? I want everyone who watches the show and wants to learn how to dance to come in. We’ll have music you’d hear on the show, and I’d teach someone a dance or moves that you’ve seen me and my partners do on the show. People really want to relate to the show.

Are you planning to open up more local schools? I think we’ll open another one in San Francisco before the end of the year. My goal is to make a chain of schools around the United States. I’m really passionate about dancing and giving people a piece of something I’ve always dreamed of.
