Severn man charged with attempted abduction

A Severn man was charged Tuesday with trying to abduct a 39-year-old woman and then threatening officers with a knife, Annapolis police said. Richard James Haney, 34, of Norcross Lane, got out of a blue Toyota, grabbed the woman’s arm and tried to pull her toward a wooded area about 8:30 a.m. on Poplar Avenue near Locust Avenue, police said.

Her screams drew the attention of pedestrians, and Haney allegedly left in his car while witnesses wrote down his license plate number.

An officer followed Haney’s car until the vehicle struck a parked Ford pickup on Poplar Avenue and drove onto a hill.

Haney, brandishing a knife, fled his car, but some construction workers formed a line to stop him, according to police. The woman, a Bay Road resident, said she did not know Haney, police said.

Haney is charged with attempted abduction, assault, reckless endangerment and traffic offenses. - Carolyn Peirce
