After Luis Blasini, 36, was able to fight off his masked attacker about 1:10 a.m. in his backyard May 23, police began an investigation that led to charges of murder for hire against Blasini’s wife and daughter.
Police said April Blasini, 35, promised her 17-year-old daughter’s boyfriend, Thomas Bennett, 19, a share of the life insurance payout she would receive after her husband’s death.
Police are not saying how much Blasini was planning to pay Bennett, or the size of the life insurance windfall the trio anticipated, spokesman Sgt. Tim Neumann said.
She met with Bennett twice to discuss the murder and passed on, through her daughter, suggestions about how to set up the attack, Detective D.M. Brazier reported in a police complaint.
Prince William County Commonwealth’s Attorney Paul Ebert said it was not clear whether the insurance money prompted the attack.
“The basic motive was domestic discord between the spouses, and the daughter was assisting the mother,” Ebert said.
Bennett wore a mask and hid behind the Blasinis’ shed at about 1:10 a.m. while inside, his girlfriend woke her father to investigate a noise outside, Brazier wrote in a criminal complaint.
When Luis Blasini looked in the shed, Bennett surprised him from behind with an aluminum baseball bat, hitting Blasini “numerous times with the intent to kill him,” Brazier wrote. Blasini “suffered numerous lacerations and a concussion,” Brazier wrote.
Bennett is due in court June 26, and April Blasini is awaiting a July 11 court date. Both are being held in jail without bail. The Blasinis’ daughter is being held in a juvenile detention center without bail, but Ebert said a petition would be filed to try her as an adult.
