Ramping up

WASHINGTON (Map, News) - The recent heavy rains and storms have taken a toll on area roadways, and now a well-traveled ramp is shutting down for as long as a month.

The Maryland State Highway Administration on Friday closed the ramp from eastbound US 50 to northbound MD 202 in Landover for emergency repairs. The slope on the ramp was literally washed away.

This will create traffic headaches as motorists are forced to detour around the area.

Drivers who want to get to northbound MD 202 from US 50 will have to head to MD 410 (East-West Highway). At the top of the ramp, drivers will turn left onto MD 410 northbound, cross over US 50, make a left on the ramp to westbound US 50, then follow the road back northbound MD 202.

Authorities are asking motorists to avoid the area if possible. The ramp is expected to be rehabbed by the 4th of July.

I-95 Widening

More roadwork is on tap this week as the Virginia Department of Transportation continues the widening of I-95 between exit 166 the Fairfax County Parkway (Route 7100) and exit 160, Woodbridge (Route 123).

On I-95 South, the left lane will be closed from exit 166; the Fairfax County Parkway to exit 163; Lorton Road, between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. today through Thursday. On Friday, that closure will be in effect between 8:30 a.m. and noon.

On I-95 North, the right lane between Route 123; Gordon Boulevard and Pohick Creek will shut down as a retaining wall is installed. That closure will take place from 9:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. today through Thursday and 9:00 a.m. until noon Friday.

There is also work scheduled on Lorton Road from the southbound I-95 ramp to the northbound I-95 ramp all week long. The right lane will shut down from 9:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. today through Thursday. The closure will also be in effect from 9:00 a.m. to noon on Friday.

And what about exit 160 southbound on I-95?? A huge bottleneck battling the afternoon sun, a Route 1 so0uthbound exit ramp and an exit 160 off ramp from Rt. 123 to southbound I-95. It all happens too quickly. I say, build a second level!!!!!! And, while you are at it, close the truck scales during rush hour. These big guys really mess it up as they merge onto I-95 again. Not their fault. Blame VDOT for such a mess!

How can I take a columnist seriously who can't tell the difference between "brake" and "break"? Can I have Mr. Eldridge back, please?

Hmmmm looks like it's going to be time to just stay home. This is a crock of you know what, maybe we as drivers all need to go to DC just like the truckers. This is just the beggining hold onto your wallet. Lucky for me i just bought a hybrid car yes a prius i got 62mi to the gallon last week. So my advice the sooner we get off this oil crap the better off we will be so go get yourself a hybrid and do something about it. Instead of just boo hooing over prices. Happy miling to ya.
