Havre de Grace teen killed returning from ‘senior week’

A recent Havre de Grace High School graduate was killed by a drunken driver on his way back from “senior week” Saturday night, Delaware police said Sunday.

Brian Wilson, 17, was the passenger in a 1997 Mazda heading north around 7 p.m. from Ocean City on Route 1 outside of Dover, Del., when driver Nathan Flanery, 18, braked suddenly to avoid a hood that had flown off a 1992 Chevy Caprice in front of them.

A 2003 Mercedes C-24, driven by Andrew Rankin, 28, of New Castle, Del., rear-ended the Mazda, said Lt. Melissa Zebley, Delaware State Police spokeswoman.

Flanery was flown to Christiana Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries; Wilson was taken to Kent General Hospital, where he later died. A passenger in the Mercedes, Paul Romenecki, 27, of Middletown, Del., also was taken to Kent in critical condition.

Police expect to charge Rankin with vehicular homicide, two counts of second-degree vehicular assault and driving under the influence.

Man reports car stolen or lost after Harford funeral

Harford deputies are searching for a car that may have been stolen or lost in North Harford, police said Sunday.

Sgt. Dave Betz, sheriff’s spokesman, said the owner of the car told investigators he was attending a funeral off Route 1 in North Harford on Saturday — though he could not recall where, exactly — and left his vehicle to spend the night with a woman he met there.

When he returned, he could not find the vehicle, but admitted he did not clearly recall where he had left it. The owner told police he usually left his keys inside the car as well, because he had a habit of losing them, Betz said.
