BELMONT (Map, News) - A woman believed to have robbed multiple banks — including one just last month in Burlingame — hit again Thursday, this time targeting a bank in downtown Belmont, police said.

A small packet of bills on the side of the highway, discovered just moments after the robbery took place, lead investigators to believe the woman fled on foot and then escaped in a getaway car. Authorities said they have no description of the car.

The woman, described as a middle-aged black woman in a sun hat and sunglasses, walked into the U.S. Bank on Ralston Avenue just before 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Belmont police Capt. Dan DeSmidt said.

She walked up to a teller and demanded money, he said. The teller handed her an undisclosed amount of cash, and the suspect then left the building on foot, DeSmidt said.

A few moments later, as officers were combing the area for signs of the suspect, they found a “small portion” of the stolen money — a small packet of bills — on the side of Ralston’s southbound onramp to U.S. Highway 101, DeSmidt said. This clue indicates there may have been a getaway car, he said.

“We’re really hoping someone will step forward saying they saw her get into a vehicle, because we believe she was in a vehicle but we have no idea what it looked like,” he said.

The robber may have been the same woman who pulled a similar heist at the U.S. Bank on 1188 El Camino Real in Burlingame, police said. In that case, the woman walked into the bank at 12:45 p.m. and waited in line. When she approached the teller, she placed her purse on the counter, put her hand inside her purse and acted as if she had a gun, according to police. She then demanded that the teller give her cash and threatened to shoot if the teller refused, police said. She then fled on foot.

DeSmidt said police are cooperating with the FBI and other local police departments.

Thats great that an armed citizen that had a handgun permit to hold off that robber until police arrived...that why you always want protection..you never know whats going to happen anywhere anytime.........There should be a nation wide permit that a person could get, rather than go through all of these different states to get one. Now wake up Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle and be like Minnesota and pass that handgun permit law...for law abdiding citizens.............
