Re: “Deadline missed for key refund of transportation tax,” June 2
Hundreds of people expecting big tax refunds will face longer delays than expected. Missing this key deadline raises additional questions about the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority:
1. Why did the NVTA collect these taxes when they knew that their constitutionality was being reviewed by the Virginia Supreme Court?
2. Why aren’t NVTA’s victims receiving fair market rate interest and administrative costs for the monies unconstitutionally taken from them?
3. Why can’t the NVTA refund these taxes as quickly as they collected them?
4. How much has this debacle unnecessarily cost Virginia taxpayers?
5. Why hasn’t the NVTA issued a formal apology for its actions?
If a private person or a private organization had inappropriately taken millions of dollars from thousands of Virginians, the perpetrators would end up receiving free room and board courtesy of the criminal justice system. However, the NVTA was designed to avoid public accountability, so it is unlikely that anyone who made this foolish decision will face any substantial consequences.
To our knowledge, not a single NVTA member has stepped forward to accept responsibility. Please call or write your representatives in Richmond and urge them to abolish this anti-democratic body.

Family values are critical for public schools to work
Re: “More options, not funding, will fix DCPS shortcomings,” May 30
Mr. Garber discredited the suggestion that money will fix D.C. schools and offered vouchers as a solution. Vouchers help students whose families value a good education, but many parents don’t.
The fundamental problem with D.C. schools and the cause of crime in the District is family dysfunction, the consequence of Planned Parenthood’s assault on black families.
Today, 78 percent of PP’s facilities are in black neighborhoods, where they promote child sex, dispense condoms (with a 15 percent failure rate) and provide abortions at 2.5 times the white rate.
The black out-of-wedlock birth rate is 70 percent, spawning every social pathology, including poverty, juvenile delinquency, crime and low educational achievement. A survey of male prisoners revealed that 90 percent don’t know — or hate — their fathers.
This year, PP received $335 million from the federal government to help destroy black families. This funding should be spent helping to strengthen families.
Even Obama’s soaring rhetoric is not enough for this country
Re: “First-time voter values performance over rhetoric,” From Readers, May 30
What a refreshing and encouraging letter from Thomas Fields, of Chevy Chase. I was beginning to think our young people were following the pied piper and about to elect candidates without first taking a serious look at their substance.
The media has so often shown clips of the new voter generation hooting and hollering over Barack Obama. But when asked what material experience he offers to gain their votes, most can’t answer the question.
They just say they are encouraged by his masterful ability to speak articulately.
Vouchers can’t solve problems of District’s pitiful schools
Re: “Competition is only solution for D.C. public schools,” from readers, May 29
Alex Brown’s argument won’t stand up to scrutiny. Abundant studies of existing school voucher plans have shown that vouchers provide no improvement over public schools.
Yes, D.C. schools need help, but the problems caused by poverty and social disorganization must also be addressed. The schools alone cannot do everything needed.
Plus, voters have shown time and time again that they do not want to be taxed to support nonpublic schools.
