Incumbents swept the San Mateo County supervisors race, ensuring another four years of leadership for Rose Jacobs Gibson, Mark Church and Adrienne Tissier.

The race pitted District 1 incumbent Church, 56, against political newcomer Demetrios Nikas, 60, an office specialist for the city of Fremont. Church’s victory ensures a third term for the former Millbrae mayor and attorney, who has pledged to reform the county’s health care system and ease overcrowding in its jails.

In District 4, longtime Supervisor Jacobs Gibson, 61, battled Ravenswood City School District board member John Bostic, 61, to retain the seat she’s held since 1999. Gibson, a former East Palo Alto mayor and the first black woman to serve on the board, had pledged in her campaign to revitalize the North Fair Oaks neighborhood of unincorporated Redwood City and create “green-collar jobs” for county residents.

Bostic ran on a platform of improving government efficiency and bridging the gap between the county’s prosperous and poor.

Daly City resident Tissier, who has represented District 5 since 2005, ran unopposed. She will focus on solving the county’s structural deficit during her next term, she said.

On Tuesday night, with 106 of 553 precincts reporting, Jacobs Gibson was celebrating her victory.

“I’m excited to be able to have the assurance of four more years, particularly since it’s the last four years I’ll be serving,” she said. “There are projects and activities I want to see completed and have a little bit more of an impact.”

Bostic said he worked to solidify support for his campaign, but was ultimately hurt by too few voters at the polls.

“The incumbent always does good in a low-voter turnout. I don’t have any regrets. I did the best I could with very limited resources,” he said.
