BALTIMORE (Map, News) - During the Memorial Day weekend, Dave Pietramala and the Johns Hopkins lacrosse team had a shot at winning yet another national championship. But about 35 miles south of Hopkins’ campus, Gary Williams and the Maryland Terrapins watched recruit Tyree Evans rescind on his commitment when it became apparent he didn’t have a shot of gaining admission.
And so the space between two coaches who traveled similar paths to restore order and instill a renewed sense of pride at their respective alma maters widens.
As Williams enters his 19th season at Maryland — a program he rescued from a cocaine-induced hangover and Bob Wade’s buffoonery — his legacy begins to erode from lackluster recruiting, poor play and a perceived malaise.
In the early years, he was at his sweat-through-a-tweed-sport-coat-best when he had the Ralph Friegden-sized task of proving Maryland was again ready for prime time.
And it wasn’t long ago Williams was the toast of the town, championed for his tireless, passionate and often indignant us-against-the-world approach he used in making opposing college basketball programs Fear the Turtle.
His rebuilding effort hit stride in 1994 when the Terrapins began a streak of 11 consecutive trips to the big dance that culminated with consecutive Final Four appearances and the school’s first national championship in 2002.
But since the 2003 season, Maryland has been little more than a blip on the national radar, only once finishing higher than fifth in the ACC regular season and spending three out of the last four postseasons dancing with scrubs in the NIT.
In the “what have you done for me lately?” world of major Division I athletics, Williams’ answer is shorter than his bench: nothing.
If you are having trouble recalling Williams, circa 1989-2003, take a look at Pietramala, because he’s doing what Williams used to do.
Considered the fiercest defender in Hopkins history, “Petro” minored in bloodletting during his career at Hopkins. Since taking over the program in 2001 all he’s done is guide the Jays to eight straight NCAA Tournaments, six Final Fours, two national titles and produce more All-Americans than McDonald’s.
And while a consolation trophy from this year’s finals brings no joy to Jaysville, Homewood inhabitants haven’t shared this much excitement since the vaccine for smallpox was discovered.
Much like Williams in his prime, Pietramala is a fan favorite and a heat-seeking missile on the sidelines — iconic and irritable all at once. He wears his heart on his sleeve and wouldn’t mind ripping out the heart of a referee from time to time.
So why is it — when both coaches share similar demeanors, work at world-class institutions and have oil fields of local high school talent in their backyards — Williams’ luster is wearing off while Pietramala continues polishing his legacy?
Because one coach still has a fire, and one is just blowing smoke.
When you watch Williams these days, you get the sense that he would just as soon be sipping a boat drink on South Beach instead of spitting barbs in the pregame huddle. And who could blame him? Coaching in the Atlantic Coast Conference isn’t exactly the most relaxing way for a 63-year-old to wind down.
But this genesis of disconnect between fans and head coach has Maryland’s big-money boosters on edge, its diehard faithful in denial and Debbie Yow, the school’s athletics director, spinning things faster than Curly Neal.
The turmoil has shifted discussions from where to hang another championship banner in the Comcast Center to message-board grumblings about Williams hanging up the whistle.
Some argue Williams is a victim of his own success. I disagree. You don’t raise the bar only to let it crash on your head and then complain when you have a knot.
Winning should beget winning — not lesser recruits, postseason failures and he-said-she-said spats with Yow.
Pietramala, now nine years into his run at Hopkins, is still coaching like he has something to prove. He still is out recruiting and getting kids to believe Hopkins is the Park Avenue penthouse of college lacrosse and wearing a Jays jersey is a badge of honor.
So how can Pietramala seem to have it all going in the right direction, while something is terribly wrong in Garyland?

I have a better one for you..... The stupid people behind the dugouts and homeplate who are on their phones with someone watching the game on tv. They wait until the camera is on them and then they wave. They do it during the entire game. Also, the men who knock little kids down who are waiting for autographs before the game. Seriously, they are little kids and they get shoved out of the way by some 30 something guy trying to get Freddie Bynum's autograph. Obnoxious. I once had front row seats right behind 1st base and this guy was trying to get Luke Scott's autograph. So he came running down the stairs and tried to get past me but I kept my legs propped up on the wall so he couldn't get past me. Then I waited until a kid came down and told him he could stand in front of my seat for an autograph. That man was piiiiissssseeed.

I blame the oriole fans for letting those scumballs from Boston and New York take over Camden yards! Support the team. The reason these fans (especcialy red sox fans) come to the ballpark in Baltimore, is because the upper brass in that rat infested Fenway makes it tough for them to afford to watch their team there, so they come to Baltimore, a 2 hour plane trip away, CHEAPER!!!! than going to that sewer called Fenway. There is a hugh difference here that isn't mentioned. Maryland, while a very good school, is labeled in college circles as a party school. While Hopkins has a demenor and air of ivy league, and that they already are #1 (whether they are or aren't). Maryland/ Gary W. has had to fight and overcome that "state"/party school mentality that's even appearant within the state and not just college wide...no wonder Williams is acting burnt out.

Ok here is one for you gang! This is an HONEST TO GOD TRUE STORY! I am in my 30's and a mom of two kids who are 9 & 3 years old. Last season we took them to an O's game, both dressed in their Nick Markakis Jersey's. Every time he came up to bat both kids would go bananas for their beloved player. It seemed that we were the only family sitting in this section because we were surrounded by a sea of Fans from another team. The group in front of us (fans of another team) thought it was great that my kids were so into the game and The Orioles. Well about the 4th inning rolled around and my husband got a tap on the shoulder from an usher telling him that our KIDS were being TOO LOUD & NEEDED to SETTLE DOWN. When we asked what they meant we were told by the Usher that they had too many compliants that we were disturbing the others around us & if we could not controll them we would have to leave! So much for the Orioles Mgmt. wanting the park to be more family friendly!

Leon you don't have a monopoly on maturity (age). I am 54 years old, been to hundreds of games on my dime (really big bucks) and I happen to personally know a majority of the young fans in question. I know them to be exuberant fans and not prone to be rude, crude, and/or lewd. I have many examples of Boston, New York, and Philly fans being directly rude, crude and lewd to me for cheering for my home team. Once when accosted by ignorant Yankees fans (about a dozen of them) I took real offense because my 12-yr old daughter was with me. The usher suggested I move to another seat. Why did I pay for lower boxes along 3rd base line? Its good that I wasn't with Zach, Matt, and the others because I would have gone to jail. These situations force us to make a choice - stay home when the Bosox or Yanks are in town or go to the game, make some noise and make it so uncomfortable for those ignorant out-of-towners that they will sit quietly or go to Fenway or Yankee Stadium to root for their team.

We don't know the full story because we have their side and the side of a PR person who can't be expected to know what happened. And for those who think cheering is taboo I've been in section 42 with the "wine and cheesers" and seen kids screaming their head off all game for the O's with anti-Red Sox signs and not have a thing done to them. Hey Leon, I'm glad you took the time out of your precious day to make a worthless comment with no facts to back up your opinion on what makes this article garbage. If you have ever been an Oriole fan or even been to an Oriole's game at Camden Yards, you would have to be completely clueless to not take note of the ushers and their attitudes towards fans that make more noise or actually cheer for the Orioles rather than the polite timely clapping of the wine and cheese crowd. Orioles management has turned Camden Yards into a corporate haven and pushed out most of the true fans that actually know baseball, cheer for the team and actually care about what happens in the game. The new regime of corporate fans are more interested in being seen, using a few company tickets, staying for a few innings, getting a crabcake sandwich and leaving early to beat traffic. The Orioles biggest PR tool this season is selling fans to come out to see the BoSox and Yanks, what does that tell you?

Horrible either way and treating fans like this is just going to make it worse! The cheering and shouting is a big part of the reason why baseball games are so much fun! There were a lot of Redsox fans in the section and because we were shouting and cheering for the O's they were giving us a lot of grief. How come these fans can come into our yard a make rude comments to our fans and the moment we say anything we are the bad guys. This is one of the worst pieces of pseudo journalism I have ever seen. The sources were two guys out of 20 that went to the game and an "unnamed" Orioles official. Dig a little deeper before you try to tell us the O’s are tossing their fans for fun. Does the Examiner think its readers are stupid enough to mistake Tony Giro as a sports writer? I have been going to the Yards since it opened and to Memorial Stadium since the mid 80s, not to mention knowing ushers and employees at the stadium to this day. They would never toss out anybody who did not get in an altercation or use abusive or profane language. To think otherwise is ludicrous. Yes Orioles fans need to be loud and drown out the Yankees fans and the Sox-Bandwagoneers, but if you believe this story you might be interested in a bridge I have to sell you.

If you don't want to be bothered by other people having a good, clean time supporting their team, then stay home and watch it on your television with junior while you sip on your cocktail and your wife puts on her apron and bakes cookies! This is Baltimore, always has been and always will be a working class Loud and Proud city! I grew up watching with my grandfather, and will always support the O's. What I cannot stand is the organization who caters to posers who have lived in MD thier whole lives, never been north of the Mason Dixon line filling our stadium claiming to be Sox or NY fans. I went to the game this past sunday, and we were selling Nats hats in OUR stadium team shop!

I was the third U in the LUUUUUUUUUKE crew and I have never been ejected from a game...I hope this goes further and is really brought to the Orioles attention. As you mention in the article one minute we were fans of the game getting showered with T-shirts, foam fingers, duffle bags and the next minute we were told we had to leave...no warnings, no reasoning, just get up and go... Pathetic...

Watching the game on TV, the commentators were taken aback by what they thought was a loud and sustained "Booo" when Luke Scott first came up to the plate. They assumed it was either Red Sox fans shouting down O's fans or (worse) O's fans. I knew right away it was O's fans chanting "Luuuuke", but if the Camden Yards gestapo was listening to the TV broadcast and the commentary, that might have triggered them to remove the Luke Scott cheering section. I understand Petey wants to keep his Red Sox and Yankee fan customers happy, but this is ridiculous. I have been to Fenway many times and sat through sustained high-volume chanting, cheering and jeering. What're the odds I could have gotten a Sox fan ejected from Fenway with my O's gear on? About the same chance Angelos has of ever repairing his reputation in this town. Great "man on the street" reporting. You would never see an article like this in the Sun.

When I finish clearing my eyes I'll respond with more detail, but simply put, thank you for sharing. Your recollection of sports and your mom is what participating is all about. I can't watch a game or participate in one without thinking of my dad(coach).

One game a few years ago a friend of mine was sitting on the Club Level seats. After a young player for the Orioles inexplicably watched 3 strikes go by with bases loaded and two outs, my friend yelled, "It's only a bus ticket back to the minors." That's it. No cussing. An usher approached him and told him not to do that again because we need to be positive towards the Orioles. That is a true story. I think Mr. Angelos became too friendly with Fidel Castro during those games he arranged against Cuba. Watch out O's fans; big brother is watching.
