Late goal propels Lowell

OAKLAND (Map, News) - Gabriela Rustia scored the go-ahead goal late in the second half as the Lowell girls’ soccer team defeated host Oakland Tech 3-2 in the Game 1 of the best-of-three Transbay Series on Monday.
The midfielder’s bad-angle shot beat the Bulldogs’ goalkeeper and was deflected in by the hands of one of the Oakland Tech defenders in the 70th minute. After a brief discussion, the referees awarded the goal to the Cardinals. Lowell (19-2-2) will try to seal the title with a win in Game 2 Thursday at 3:30 p.m. at Boxer Stadium.
“I’m very proud of them,” Lowell coach Ernie Feibusch said. “I think we came together at the right time to give ourselves a chance to win a championship.”
Lowell, which won its 11th consecutive San Francisco Section title to earn the Transbay bid, went ahead 2-0 Monday behind first-half goals from Lupe Gamez and Lilianna Pedroni. The Bulldogs (6-1-1) equalized it midway through the second half on goals by Cecilia Medina (50th minute) and Mya Miah (60th). After Rustia scored to put the Cardinals back in front, Tech put the pressure on, but Lowell goalie Rachel Baskin was up to the task and made several nice saves.
“Baskin did a fabulous job,” Feibusch said. “She really got tough in there.”

MORE TRANSBAY: In other Transbay news, the Lowell baseball and softball teams each resume their best-of-three series today. In baseball, the Cardinals (25-6-1) can clinch the title after defeating Skyline (18-6) 9-7 on Saturday at McAfee Coliseum. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. at USF’s Benedetti Diamond.
In softball, Lowell (21-4) will look to bounce back from a disappointing 17-3 loss to Oakland Tech (12-1) in Game 1 on Friday at Lang Field. Game 2 is set for 3:30 p.m. at Laney College in Oakland.
WALLENBERG 12TH: San Francisco Section medalist T.J. Jang shot an 11-over 81 to finish tied for 59th as Wallenberg competed in the NorCal boys’ golf tournament at Richmond Country Club on Monday.
The Bulldogs shot a 535 to finish in 12th place. Rocklin shot 369 to win the championship by two strokes over Cardinal Newman of Santa Rosa. Daniel Semmler of Carlmont carded a 2-under 68 to claim the individual title.
