Catonsville (Map, News) - A 17-year-old Gwynn Oak boy was arrested and charged Thursday with the Catonsville murder of a father-to-be over Mother’s Day weekend.

Baltimore County police have arrested Daniel Eugene Thompson Jr. and charged him with the murder Saturday night of Carlos Adolfo Santay-Carrillo, 19.

Investigators said they were led to him through a tip after the case was given widespread media coverage.

Santay-Carrillo was killed in a gas station in the 5200 block of Baltimore National Pike at 6 p.m. Saturday as he was making preparations to take his pregnant wife to the hospital to give birth.

In front of several customers pumping gas, the robber grabbed Santay-Carrillo around the chest and demanded money, police said. Santay-Carrillo pulled away, police said, but the suspect stabbed him multiple times.

U.S. Rep. Elijah Cummings arrived at the scene moments after the stabbing and held the dying man’s head in his last minutes of life.

Following the crime, the assailant ran from the scene, but as he ran, his picture was recorded by a nearby business’ surveillance camera.

Friends of Santay-Carrillo’s widow, Claudia Sales, 23, held a news conference Monday to ask for help finding his killer.

After the news conference, a concerned citizen came forward that a man known as Danny might be responsible, police said. Efforts to identify Danny led police to Thompson, who matched the physical description of the culprit in the video.

A search of Thompson’s home also turned up clothes matching the clothes worn by the killer that day, police said.

He is being held without bail at the Baltimore County Detention Center.
