SAN BRUNO (Map, News) - A 12-year-old girl who rode her bicycle into a van in San Bruno on Wednesday was under medical care in San Francisco after suffering severe injuries and head trauma, authorities said.

The girl, a San Bruno resident, struck the van at an unknown speed, likely while riding home from Parkside Intermediate School, where she is a student, San Bruno Police Department Cmdr. Matt Campi said.

She suffered “severe injuries” and was taken to S.F. General Hospital.

The accident occurred at Niles and Oak avenues at 2:59 p.m., Campi said. The female driver of the van stopped and police said they do not believe she will be charged.

The girl suffered head trauma, fire Chief Dennis Haag said. She was taken immediately to the hospital, where her mother later arrived, he said. The girl has not been identified because she is a minor.

Parkside is located at 1801 Niles Ave., about one-fifth of a mile from where the accident occurred.

I do not understand how the person she hit did not realize it and kept driving. The driver circled around the block before returning to the scene. Has anyone checked whether or not the driver was on her cell phone at the time? There were so many children as witnesses who have been discussing this accident, it seems to me, a full investigation is in order. My heart and prayers go out to the family and to all her friends at Parkside.

Perhaps counseling has been made available to those that witnessed this accident but the kids have not been made aware of this, and yes they did stress on the importance of wearing a helmet, but for someone to assume I am making things up for the fun of it, it's just plain ignorance. Yes the resources may be there but how many kids who actually witnessed the accident actually seek help? you sound like an angry person. perhaps you need counseling. The important thing here is that there is a family hurting and i am praying for them.

No counseling available for witnesses? Absolutely untrue. Why do people make things up at a time like this? The school has had counselors for several days. The school has also stressed the importance of wearing a helmet.

I am a former student of this school and a student of the local highschool. This girl was in my brother's grade at the school and known by many. Unfortunately she passed away. My prayers go out to her and her family. May she rest in peace. You will never be forgotten.

Anyone unclear about the accident should visit the site...the steepness of the hill and the lack of visibility for vehicles entering that intersection (oak and niles) added up to a heartbreaking accident...

I know the girl that was riding her friends bike after school. She wasn't wearing a helmet and the car that she drove into was not at fault. The bike had no working brakes and she was not aware of this when she hopped on it. This was all just a bad accident.

She wasn't wearing a helmet and crashed into the sliding door of the van where the van's drivers young kids were sitting. It is a sad situation for everyone involved.

The bike had no brakes (the girl took it from another student) and she ran into the backside of the van. She was riding down a steep hill and the van driver didn't even see her. I don't think she had a helmet because its wasn't even her bike.

How fast was the van driving in a school zone to have hurt the little girl so much?

How could a little girl ride into a van? With the way parents drive around there, is it possible the van hit her? This is so sad...... children should be safe when riding home from school. My prayers go out to the little girl and her family.
