Article History WASHINGTON (Map, News) - Students in the D.C. school system opposed to the massive changes looming in nearly 50 schools set to close or be restructured next academic year have scheduled a walkout next week.
Fliers being circulated citywide call for a walkout on Friday, May 23. Students are urged to descend on Schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee’s office at 10 a.m.
This marks the second walkout organized in response to the planned closures of 23 schools. Howard University students are helping organize the protest.
The first walkout happened in January just before Rhee released the final list of schools on the chopping block.
That time, students and some staff members left DC Public Schools buildings and marched to the chancellor’s office.
The protest was directed at
the way schools were being selected for closing — by size of enrollment rather than academic record.
The approach for the upcoming protest is similar, as is the motivation. But this time, more students are behind the effort, sources told The Examiner.
Maria Jones, a Burroughs Elementary School parent, said the students involved are at scattered schools in the District or attend nearby Howard.
“We fully support them in what they’re doing,” she said.
Fliers advertising the walkout say the better approach to reform is to “keep public schools in our neighborhood” and fix them, rather than close them.
Students staging the event are also critical of the possibility that Rhee could hand over control of long-failing schools to private companies or public charter operators, which are choices available to her under the No Child Left Behind Act.
It isn’t clear how many people will be involved in the walkout.
Earlier this school year, students were behind a protest at the city’s largest public high school, Woodrow Wilson.
Rhee took away students’ free lunch period there and made them eat in their classrooms following a rash of violent incidents. That walkout, involving nearly 100 students, prompted the chancellor to reverse her ruling.

Just as I predicted it! The scared council passed the bill to allow more money for dc schools without appropriate documentation. REason: They didn't want to take the blame of schools not being ready although they realize that they may be making a mistake with contract abuse and fraud. They took an oath to protect the public's money and they did it anyway knowing that their decision couldn not ensure that student achievement would be positively impacted. Jerks!!!!

Now the council gets angry? It took long enough. If they were serious about agency heads and other dc officials showing up to hearings, there is a remedy. It's called a subpeona! It's still a game. When they do show up, the council will give the money right or wrong. They are afraid of being blamed with schools not opening on time even if it means to continue abdicating their fiduciary responsibility of protecting the public's money. They've already admitted to working in the dark and approving contracts without appropriate documentation. They've allowed themselves to be up the creek without a paddle and their backs are against the wall. Voters please, please remember and get these people out of office!!

DCPS needs somebody more experienced and compassionate to URBAN EDUCATION and who really CARES about the District of Columbia i.e., their teachers, principals, students, and the families of this city. Replacements/firings of administrators, teachers and closing of schools are RADICAL CHANGES all done in 1 year on the job is most extreme. Where are the RESULTS?

Inefficiency of the Inexperienced! Check out the DCPS Summer School Program! Chancellor Rhee fired over 22 DCPS Assistant principals. Most of the APs were from the secondary level. The Assistant Principals are the same folks who have in the past been placed as the leaders of the the Summer School Program. Assistant principals are the persons who complete the master schedules for the upcoming school year. ANOTHER BLUNDER for Chancellor Rhee.

Mr. Mendelson's or Robert Bobb may be the answer to the school system's problem. The problem is that the damage is being done daily for the next 3 years. It's obvious that Fenty's decision to try this "experimental model" of Chancellor Rhee and hoping for a "Radical Change" has only made things worst. The District of Columbia families must take back their school!

Chancellor Rhee's and her inexperienced team in the Central Office demonstrates their poor leadership skills daily. The firing of 1/3 of the 145 principals and assistant principals in DCPS and the hiring of TFA is just the beginning of a MAJOR CATASTROPHE for the school system. TFA was contracted to help solve the “teacher shortage” in DCPS schools. The Teach For America (TFA) candidates entering the DCPS teaching workforce has undermined teacher professionalism? Over the past 8 years those DCPS students are taught year after year by a passing parade of neophytes with varying degrees of preparation. The test scores reflect no real changes in their classrooms. The data shows that sending ill-prepared neophytes to serve some of the DCPS neediest students have not yet learned to be effective and can not manage classrooms let alone teach students The absence of accomplished veteran teachers to guide our students only exacerbates the challenge in the DCPS.

If each window at one school cost $6300, then where is all the money coming from to fix the rest and how much will contractors be given? What happens when their work is found to be shotty? Oh well, I guess we have to wipe out more jobs at DCPS to pay the bills. If the cost of one window is $6300, how much is a roof, air conditioning, new boilers, bathroom repairs and etc? Will there be any more money left to buy textbooks, upgrade technology and improve food service for the children? Or will the spending be so out of control that the repairs are not completed and we can't service the childen? Beware, if the money runs out, contractors take the money they can get and then they stop working. So far, nothing changes.

Over $6,000 for a window? And, the DC employee overseeing the Shepherd Park Elementary project thinks this is perfectly normal? How ludicrous!!!!!! Those windows should cost, a maximum of $1,000 for the window itself and $500 for any masonry work. I've worked in construction for the last 3 years as a general contractor and I have never seen such a ridiculous price. Amazing! I think the Examiner should find out how many contractors bid on this job. Really, I mean, if DC doesn't have an adequate number of contractors then it needs to fix that problem first.

DCPS was so disfunctional that something drastic had to be done. Here is an example. I was certified and highly qualified from the state of CA. About ten years ago, a high school principal hired me. After submitting my paperwork at the certfication unit, I was given an emergency 1 year certificate. When I contended that there was reciprocity between DC and CA, I was told that it was the principal's request that I would not be given a reciprocity. I went to the Union, brought written documents, but no one would honor the written law. I was told that this principal makes her own rules and regulations and that even a lawyer would not solve it. Needless to say I transferred to MD and I was able to get a full certficiation before my CA certificate expired. the chancellor saw all this and started shaking up the system.

Success based on the Rhee's standards should be reflected by the increase number of proficient students on the DCPS DC CAS scores on all levels. When the test scores come back this July the Administration & City Council will see what a real mess they have created for the DCPS. A lot of the work StandardsWorks did involved copying the Social Studies Standards from California, and if I'm not mistaken the Math and Language Arts from Mass. Go ahead and Google the Social Studies standards. What did DCPS get for 300,000 and why did DCPS have to pay so much for what was publicly available?
