Claudia Sales and her newborn child are facing life without her husband and the child's father, Carlos Santay-Carrillo, who was killed the same day Sales gave birth.

BALTIMORE (Map, News) - Carlos Santay-Carrillo was rushing to buy gas to take his pregnant wife to the hospital, police say, when the robber came upon him.

In front of several customers pumping gas in Catonsville at 6 p.m. Saturday, the robber grabbed Santay-Carrillo around the chest and demanded money. The father-to-be pulled away, but the suspect stabbed him multiple times – leaving Santay-Carrillo’s wife without a husband, and a newborn baby without a dad, police said.

Now, his wife, Claudia Sales, 23, is “in shock,” according to a family friend who identified herself only as Brenda and said she broke the news of Santay-Carrillo’s death to Sales. “She can’t believe it. She’s saying, ‘This is not true. This did not happen.’ She’s crying and crying.”

Santay-Carrillo, 19, was fatally stabbed Mother’s Day weekend at the Carroll Fuel gas station in the 5200 block of Baltimore National Pike, hours before his wife gave birth to the couple’s first child, Carlos David.

On Monday, Sales’ friends held a news conference to call for leads in Santay-Carrillo’s slaying.

When police found him, he was “bleeding profusely,” said Baltimore County police spokesman Cpl. Mike Hill.

“The most unfortunate thing is the cowardly way this suspect went about this,” Hill said. “There’s just no regard for life whatsoever in this incident. Instead of running away and not completing the robbery, he decided to kill this man. ... This is a very sad case in our Hispanic community.”

Several witnesses described the suspect to detectives as a male in his mid-20s, between 5-foot-6-inches and 5-foot-9-inches tall, weighing between 140 and 160 pounds, with short black hair,  wearing blue jeans and worn black tennis shoes. Police are looking for connections to other robberies in the area.

“This is not a crime-ridden area,” Hill said.

Family friend Bertha Anderson said: “It can happen to anybody else. Why should we let that happen again and again and again?”

Santay-Carrillo was excited to be a father and was extremely dedicated to his wife, Anderson said.

“They had a crib already set up,” she said. “There’s just so many emotions. She said she’s got a reason to keep on living. There’s a little person who’s a part of Carlos.”

The official Baltimore County Police press released contained the following sentence: "Detectives were able to interview several witnesses at the scene who described the suspect as a black male in his mid 20’s, 5’6” to 5’9” tall, weighing about 140 to 160 pounds, with short black hair. The suspect was wearing blue jeans and worn black tennis shoes." Mr. Broadwater conveniently omitted the "black male" portion of the suspect description. He incorporated the rest of that sentence verbatim into his story. He didn't miss anything. The omission was purposeful. Shame on you Mr. Broadwater. Shame on the rest of you who defended him and said that the police did not release the race of the suspect.

Additionally, "several witnesses" told police that the suspect was wearing "worn black tennis shoes." Do you honestly think that these witnesses noted the color and condition of the suspect's shoes but completely failed to notice the suspect's race? If Mr. Broadwater "missed a key fact" in his article, he should start looking for a new career.

It would be nearly impossible for witnesses to observe the suspect's height, weight, age, hair color and hair length without noting his race. The omission of race from the description of a crime suspect is part of a conspiracy by the news media to shield those members of a "protected class" from further public scrutiny. The conspiracy exists whether you want to admit it or not. It is routinely done in this town. Print articles as well as stories on the broadcast news in this town regarding crimes routinely omit the race of the suspect. It has gotten to the point where if the race of the suspect is omitted, you can assume that the suspect is African-American. If the suspect is white, that is always mentioned. As a former police officer, I can assure you that the race of the suspect is ALWAYS released to the news media by the police. The police are in the business of arresting criminals and aren't going to hamstring themselves by omitting race from the description of the suspe

the examiner didn't release a race on the suspect because it doesn't have one. The police provide very limited details as to suspect information when investigating homicides. Basically, the examiner knows nothing about this incident.

I don't think the reporter missed any facts. The description is the same in several articles, I don't see how witnesses could describe his age and the color and length of his hair without assigning a race.

The comment labeled "Rocko the Ignorant" said "...that a reporter missed a key fact is sad, but not some 'dark conspiracy of political correctness.' Reporters are people, not government tools." I believe an objective reading of Luke Broadwater's articles will demonstrate his liberal approach to "reporting" and validate the observation that this key fact was probably not overlooked, it was noted and omitted.

"This is a very sad case in our Hispanic Community"...this is a very sad case in everybody's community. Please don't try to stereotype this as someone targeted a person in the Hispanic community. Killers are killers, they don't care who they kill. It saddens me to think that the paper did not take the opportunity to mention a fund for the baby or the mother. It is beyond the scope of Maryland's social programs to meet the future financial and emotional needs of this mother and child.

What Rocko fails to understand is how much work reporters do on a daily basis in this day and age. That a reporter missed a key fact is sad, but not some "dark conspiracy of political correctness." Reporters are people, not government tools.

What is missing from this description of the suspect: "Several witnesses described the suspect to detectives as a male in his mid-20s, between 5-foot-6-inches and 5-foot-9-inches tall, weighing between 140 and 160 pounds, with short black hair, wearing blue jeans and worn black tennis shoes"? The race of the suspect. A killer is on the loose in Catonsville and the news media has decided that we need to be shielded from the pain that may be caused by the release of the race of the killer. Bravo, Examiner. Way to report the news. Lets just pretend that the killer did not have a race. Better yet, let's let the people guess at the race of the suspect. This is a sad, politically correct world in which we are living.
