Doc sent to prison for perjury

SAN FRANCISCO (Map, News) - A San Francisco surgeon was sentenced to six months in jail today for perjury.

Dr. Bruce Barker, a physician for Kaiser Permanente, was the key witness in the trial of Marvin Washington, who was accused of illegally possessing a gun outside the San Francisco housing project where he lived.

Barker testified he was at the housing project on the afternoon Washington was arrested and had seen a cellular phone - not a gun - in his right hand.

Barker was four miles away performing surgery at the time of the incident, according to the indictment.

He was sentenced today to six months in prison, and ordered to serve three years of supervised release following release. When he is released from prison, Dr. Barker is to serve six months in home detention. He was also ordered to pay a $35,000 fine.
