STAFFORD, Va. (Map, News) - Storms ripped through Virginia late Thursday and early Friday, damaging homes in Stafford County and causing minor flooding other areas.

Between 75 to 100 homes in a south Stafford County subdivision were damaged, about 30 of them severely, during a storm around 10:30 p.m. Thursday, said Cathy Riddle, a county spokeswoman.

Two people were injured, Riddle said. One was taken to a local hospital and released.

The storm hit some streets within the England Run North subdivision extremely hard, shearing off second stories of homes and leaving only interior walls standing, Riddle said. On other streets, sides of garages were blown off and wooden planks pierced through the roofs of some houses.

"Some of the damage appears to have been caused by a tornado, but we can't say that for sure at this time," Riddle said.

National Weather Service officials planned to visit the area Friday to determine if the damage was caused by heavy winds or a tornado. The area was under a tornado warning when the storm hit.

About 100 people spent the night at an emergency shelter at a local middle school, Riddle said.

Weather service officials confirmed Friday that a tornado also touched down Thursday night in Franklin and Henry counties in western Virginia. The EF1 twister, with winds of 86 to 95 mph, downed trees and damaged homes in a mile-long path, officials said.

There also were unconfirmed reports of a tornado in the Triangle area in Prince William County.

Portions of northern and central Virginia and southern Maryland experienced minor flooding Friday morning.

More than 3,100 Dominion Virginia Power customers were without power, including about 1,200 in northern Virginia. Another 1,400 Appalachian Power customers in southwest Virginia were without electricity. Power was out to about 13,500 homes and businesses in Maryland and another 3,200 in the District of Columbia.

Flooding on railroad tracks forced disruptions and delays for commuters using MARC in Maryland.
