Government forecasts U.S. winter wheat crop up 17 percent

WICHITA, Kan. (Map, News) - The Agriculture Department forecasts the nation's winter wheat harvest this season at 1.78 billion bushels, up 17 percent from last year.

Kansas again leads the nation in production. The official estimate of the Kansas crop is forecast at 357.1 million bushels. If realized, that would make this year's winter wheat harvest in the state 26 percent bigger than a year ago. Yields were running 38 bushels an acre on average.

Oklahoma, Washington and Texas trail behind. In Missouri, the crop was estimated to come in at 58.2 million bushels.
