Ore. landmark restaurant along Hwy. 26 destroyed by fire

ELSIE, Ore. (Map, News) - Oney's Restaurant and Lounge, known by travelers to the Oregon coast for its giant Paul Bunyan sign out front, has been destroyed by fire.

Fire investigators were trying to determine Wednesday what caused the historic landmark along Highway 26 in Elsie to burn to the ground Tuesday night.

The three-alarm fire broke out around 10:30 p.m. KGW-TV said flames reportedly reached as high as forty feet.

Fire crews say it appeared that the blaze may have started in the bar area on the east side of the building.

Oney's is a local landmark in the town of Elsie founded by "Oney" Camberg in the early 1920's to feed loggers.

I now live in louisiana and I'm 47 years old and I'm planning to move back to albany oregon real soon. I loved it in elsie oregon when I was young, I was always in the woods playing and making forts behind the house. We lived in a old stage coach house by the nehaleum river. I would never trade those memories for any thing. Oneys was most remembered as part of my home, and I pray to god that it can some way by a mirical it can be rebilt.
