NCAA dings more than 20 D-I programs in Texas on grades

DALLAS (Map, News) - More than 20 Division I teams at a dozen Texas universities face penalties or warnings for failing to meet the NCAA's academic goals.

According to this year's Academic Progress Report released Tuesday, Texas State, Texas-San Antonio and North Texas are among the hardest-hit schools in the Lone Star State. The state's major athletics powers - Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech and Baylor - emerged relatively unscathed.

The football and men's basketball teams at North Texas fell short of the mandated cut score of 925 to avoid penalties. The football team will have its scholarships reduced from 85 to 80 next season for a score of 917. The basketball team's score of 924 means it will lose one scholarship next season, school officials said.

North Texas athletic director Rick Villarreal defended the academic performance of UNT athletes, pointing out that graduation rates among athletes increased from 37 percent to 67 percent from 2001 to 2006.

Villarreal said the academic support is in place to "further the ability of our student-athletes to be academically successful and to graduate. Our focus is to promote an environment where our students achieve their academic goals."

At Texas-San Antonio, the men's cross country team (872), the baseball team (883) and the women's basketball team (914) failed to reach the 925 score. The women's basketball team reduced its scholarships from 15 to 14 last season, essentially accepting its punishment a year ahead of time, spokesman Kyle Stephens said.

The men's cross country and track and field teams at Texas-San Antonio have a combined 12.6 scholarships, which will be reduced to 12.1 because of the academic performance of the cross country runners, Stephens said. The baseball team, which has a maximum 11.7 scholarships, will offer 11.21.

At Texas State, the men's basketball (847), women's basketball (917) and football (918) teams fell short of the mandated cut score of 925. The women's basketball team lost one scholarship and the football team lost 2.95, but both programs already took those punishments last season, athletic director Larry Teis said.

The men's basketball team at Texas State will receive a warning, Teis said.

"The future projections are that all our teams will be over 925, so we should be OK," Teis said.

Other programs receiving either a warning or a penalty are:

- Houston women's basketball

- Prairie View men's golf

- Sam Houston State baseball and men's indoor track

- Stephen F. Austin football and women's basketball

- Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball

- Texas-Arlington baseball and women's basketball

- Texas-Pan American baseball

- Texas Southern men's tennis

- UTEP men's basketball

Nationwide, more than 700 of the 6,272 Division I teams fell short of the mandated cut score of 925 to avoid penalties, and 218 were assessed punishments ranging from warning letters to reductions in practice times. Some were granted waivers while others improved enough to avoid penalties.

The scores were based on academic performance from 2003-07. Athletes earn one point for remaining academically eligible each semester and another point each semester they remain at the school, accumulating a maximum of four points each year. The scoring is altered slightly for schools on a quarters-based calendar.
