LOS ANGELES (Map, News) - An Orange County hospital was under investigation amid claims that it dumped a homeless patient on Skid Row, authorities said.
The city attorney's office said Monday it was looking into the case.
Steven Davis, 32, a bipolar schizophrenic, was left unannounced at the Union Rescue Mission on April 29, according to shelter administrators.
Davis said he was driven the 40 miles from the Orange County hospital to the mission.
College Hospital in Costa Mesa denied that it dumped Davis and said it found nothing improper when it conducted an investigation last week following complaints from the patient's mother.
"The patient requested discharge to the shelter, and he had medications and prescriptions for more, along with an appointment for a mental health clinic," said Wayne Lingenfelter, College Hospital's chief executive officer.
The city attorney's office will decide whether to file charges, Deputy City Attorney Gordon Turner said.
"What makes this case different is that it's across county lines," he said.
